Triodos Bank Review: My Honest Experience After 7+ Years

I’ve been banking with Triodos Bank since around 2017, and it wasn’t an accident. It was a deliberate choice driven by a genuine desire to bank more sustainably — and the results of the Eerlijke Bankwijzer (Fair Bank Guide) played a big role in sealing the deal. Here’s an honest look at what those years of experience have actually been like.

What Made Me Choose Triodos in the First Place

I didn’t just want somewhere to park my money. I wanted to know that my bank was doing something responsible with it. Triodos has consistently ranked at the top of the Eerlijke Bankwijzer, an independent benchmark that evaluates banks on issues like climate, human rights, and transparency. That track record was enough for me. The choice felt both principled and practical.

Day-to-Day Banking: Does It Actually Work?

In short — yes, and quite well. Everyday transactions are smooth and hassle-free. One thing that genuinely impressed me over the years is how much the mobile app has evolved. It used to feel pretty bare-bones, but it’s grown into a fully capable banking app with all the features you’d expect from a modern bank, including Apple Pay support. It’s simply pleasant to use.

The One Drawback Worth Mentioning

Triodos doesn’t have any physical branch locations, which some people do notice. Banks like ASN do offer in-person branches, and for certain customers that sense of a physical presence matters. Personally, I’ve never once needed to walk into a branch in all my years as a customer. Phone support is responsive, and virtually everything can be handled online. So while it’s a fair point to raise, it hasn’t been an issue for me.

Savings Rates: Competitive, but Not Always the Leader

Triodos doesn’t always top the charts when it comes to savings interest rates — there are specialized providers that edge them out. That said, they hold up well compared to the major traditional banks. And honestly, if your only criterion is chasing the highest rate available, you’re probably making a different kind of decision than someone who also cares about where their money is actually being invested.

My Verdict After Seven-Plus Years

I’m still a happy Triodos customer, and I don’t see that changing. The combination of values-driven banking, a well-built app, and solid customer service makes it an easy choice for me to stand behind. There’s nothing flashy to report — just a bank that consistently delivers on its promises in a way that aligns with what I care about.
